Coastal Heritage

The association is working to preserve and highlight our rich coastal heritage.

Salvo Day Use Area

The association partnered with the National Park Service to construct a bathhouse at the Salvo Day Use Area. The association applied for and received funding from Dare County's Tourism Board.

The bathhouse has architectural features from the Gull Shoal Lifesaving Station, which was located a short ways down N.C. 12 from the Salvo Day Use Area. Men from many Salvo families worked at the Gull Shoal Station. Rasmus Midgett was stationed at Gull Shoal when he single-handedly rescued seven crewmen from the shipwrecked Priscilla on August 18, 1899. Midgett was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for this heroic deed.

For the last several years, board members have been cleaning around neglected graves in the Salvo Day Use area and elsewhere throughout the three villages.

Wayside Exhibits

The association is gathering place names and stories and locating our existing older homes to develop wayside exhibits for our future pathway.

The Outer Banks Scenic Byway Committee is preparing a nomination for National Scenic Byway status.
